Personal Trainer Stop Watch



Research, rapid prototyping & visual design of a personal trainer stopwatch app. Working with another student (Fiona) to identify her pain points with her workout routine at home and compare this with her workout routine in the gym to help develop an app which addressed her needs.

PROBLEM





PT Stopwatch is an app which will allow Fiona to be able to create an effective gym routine at home which would allow Fiona to obtain the same results as she would in her gym routine

I found the problem seemed to stem from the fact that Fiona was unable to manage her timings when she was exercising at home. She was not achieving the same standard of exercise at home as she was with her personal trainer.

Hypothesis



As Fiona has to look at her stop watch every time she does an exercise it breaks her form. This means she is not achieving the full benefit of her workout as she needs to constantly keep changing position.

Stopwatches are mainly used to record time lapses as opposed to setting specific timers.

So I needed to incorporate these 2 key features to help Fiona with her problem -

What I dID



Research





I carried out some user research as I wanted to ask Fiona a bit more about her exercise routines and schedules to ascertain what her typical session consisted of. Her main concern here is that she wants to increase her strength as she feels that she is lacking in this department because she can only attend a maximum of 2 classes per week, which means she would like to make improvements here by doing extra exercises at home.






Sketching






In order for us to to get closer to a finalised app we started to run through some low fidelity sketches. This helped me in understanding the users needs and mapping them out onto a few screens.



Clickable Prototyping





After I finalised this paper prototype I went on to create a clickable prototype with Marvel. This app allows us to link to each page of the sketched prototype to the another screen. This allowed me to test with my user and with other people so I can make improvements where necessary, based on the users feedback.





High-Fidelity Prototype





After receiving feedback I created a High-fidelity mock up with features that allowed Fiona to add a timer to her exercise routine so while she is working out a buzzer will sound informing her that she needs to get ready to change position, this change/transition period is also set by the user depending on the exercises they have set in their routine.
